CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITYImpact on SocietyWe are committed to being a socially and ethically responsible member of our community and we recognise the obligations we have towards our staff, customers, suppliers and the environment. We have gained a reputation for honesty and fairness. In essence, we treat others as we would like to be treated. Our greatest contribution to the local community is through the provision of secure, long-term employment to our workforce, most of whom live locally. We support many local charities and organisations, and actively take part in several company charity days each year. We support our staff in taking part in charity fund raising events such as Race for Life and provide a Father Christmas for the local primary school’s Christmas party. Environmental ImpactWe continuously look for ways to reduce our consumption of energy and resources in order to minimise the environmental impact of our activity. We have a company-wide scheme for recycling paper, cardboard and metal. Employees are encouraged to reduce paper wastage and we have recently phased out paper-based documentation in favour of electronic versions. In our manufacturing unit, we have installed new equipment that has reduced water consumption by over 90% and we operate a paint recovery and recycling system. We have recently invested in new software and metal punching machinery that reduces material and labour wastage, is more energy efficient and improves the working environment for our employees with lower noise levels. In the design of our products, we aim to increase our customers’ efficiency and reduce their consumption of power and consumables. For many years, the modular design of our products has extended product life and avoided early obsolescence. One of our more recent product developments, the Watkiss PowerSquare, completely eliminates the use of heat activated glue in the book binding process. During 2010 we will be conducting a full energy audit to identify further improvements that can be made. Relations with Suppliers, Partners and ContractorsWe choose our suppliers with great care. As with our customers, we aim to develop long term relationships based on fairness and mutual benefit. Where possible we prefer to use local companies. We audit major suppliers to verify not only that they can meet our requirements, but also that they observe good business practice and conduct their business in a responsible way. We do not dictate how our suppliers operate, but we will not work with businesses that do not have responsible practices. Relations with EmployeesWe recognise that our employees are an invaluable asset. We depend on their skills and commitment and, in turn, we aim to be a good employer and to reward our employees based on their skill and performance. It is our belief that the only fair criteria for treating people in employment differently are ability and performance. We aim to give everyone the same consideration and opportunity for employment, training, career development and promotion. We have a responsibility to our employees to create a safe and healthy working environment. We ensure that safety practices are followed and that all employees are trained to carry out their job safely. We do not tolerate harassment, discrimination or bullying of any type. We also recognise the importance of work-life balance and where possible aim to accommodate more flexible forms of working. We promote good communication throughout the business. We have regular team meetings to discuss business goals and address wide ranging issues. Alongside this, we have maintained a family-business ethos and have an open-door policy that enables any member of staff to bring issues directly to senior management. We have a low staff turnover: 50% of our staff have been with the company for over 10 years. Relations with CustomersWe are focused on meeting our customers’ needs by supplying the best possible product for their requirements, which provides consistent quality, reliability and safety in return for fair reward. We firmly believe that openness and fairness in our dealings with customers is essential to successful long term relationships. We value feedback and suggestions in order to improve the product and service that we offer. With our major customers, we work together on product development and quality improvement plans. Technical after-sales support is an integral part of our customer offering. We have developed customised technical support programs for our products and partners to ensure that the end-user of our products is well supported in world-wide locations.
